Low self-esteem can impact every area of life: from how we see ourselves to how we relate to others.

Low self-esteem and a diminished sense of self-worth often arise from life experiences, internalised beliefs, or past trauma. You may feel like you’re never good enough, constantly comparing yourself to others, or struggling to set healthy boundaries. These thoughts and feelings can make it difficult to trust your abilities, make decisions, and feel confident in your interactions.

Over time, these beliefs can lead to heightened anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and even burnout. But with the right support, you can begin to challenge and reshape these negative patterns.

Warming Light Counselling offers therapy that helps you understand where low self-esteem comes from and develop new ways to relate to yourself with kindness and confidence.f

How therapy can help

At Warming Light Counselling, I provide a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore the root causes of your low self-esteem and low self-worth. Together, we’ll uncover the underlying factors. Whether it’s childhood experiences, societal expectations, or self-critical thinking that contribute to how you see yourself. Through our work, you'll gain practical tools to cultivate self-compassion, strengthen your self-acceptance, and navigate the world with greater confidence

Our approach helps you shift old, limiting beliefs and develop a stronger, healthier sense of self. The goal is for you to feel “enough” just as you are, free from the pressures of perfectionism and the need to please others.

Using a blend of EMDR therapy, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), we aim to address the core of your struggles. By processing past trauma and the memories that shape your self-perception, we can help you rediscover your inherent value and embrace your true worth. We will explore the emotions tied to your experiences and help you build healthier coping mechanisms to manage these in everyday life.

In therapy, we’ll explore these patterns, challenge negative thinking, and work on shifting those old, deeply held beliefs that have kept you from living a life that reflects your true value. It’s time to break the cycle of self-criticism and replace it with self-love and self-compassion.

What type of therapy do you use to improve self-esteem?

Warming Light Counselling draws from a range of evidence-based therapies to help individuals improve their self-esteem, including EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Each of these therapies addresses self-esteem from a unique angle:

  • EMDR Therapy helps individuals process and heal past traumatic experiences, whether they are single incidents or long-standing patterns. By targeting distressing memories, EMDR Therapy allows clients to shift their perceptions of themselves and the world around them, replacing self-doubt with a more balanced and compassionate view.

  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) is particularly helpful for individuals struggling with feelings of shame and self-criticism. CFT teaches clients to develop a nurturing, kind, and accepting relationship with themselves, which is essential for rebuilding self-esteem. Through techniques such as mindfulness and self-compassion exercises, clients can begin to let go of harsh self-judgment and instead embrace their imperfections with care.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) encourages individuals to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment while focusing on values-based action. Rather than trying to control or eliminate negative self-talk, ACT helps clients build psychological flexibility, so they can act in alignment with their core values, even in the presence of difficult emotions. This can significantly improve self-esteem by helping individuals live authentically, without the burden of trying to be “perfect.”

Together, these therapeutic approaches work in harmony to address both the cognitive and emotional aspects of self-esteem. By processing past trauma, building self-compassion, and taking values-driven actions, clients can develop a healthier sense of self-worth and confidence.
