Enhancing Self-Awareness and Emotional Regulation through Sensory Understanding

Sensory Preferences Mapping and Regulation Strategies

Many of us don’t realize how deeply sensory experiences impact our mental health. In childhood, we often had natural buffers, time, quiet, and rest, to help regulate our nervous system. However, as we move through adulthood, balancing work, relationships, responsibilities, and life transitions, our ability to process sensory input shifts, often leading to overwhelm, stress, and emotional dysregulation.

Understanding your sensory preferences can be one of the most empowering tools for emotional regulation. It helps you recognise emotions, increase awareness of triggers, and develop adaptive coping strategies.

This process may include:
Distress tolerance skills to navigate overwhelming moments
Self-soothing strategies to bring calm and regulation
Sensory modulation techniques to work with your nervous system instead of against it

By linking context to behavior and thoughts, this approach also fosters self-compassion, helping you respond to yourself with greater understanding and care.

What to expect:

Over structured sessions, we will:

  • Map your sensory preferences to understand how different types of input impact your emotions and energy levels

  • Explore your Window of Tolerance—the zone where you feel most regulated and engaged—and how sensory strategies can help you stay within it

  • Build a personalised sensory toolkit with practical strategies to support self-regulation, reduce overwhelm, and improve emotional well-being

This isn’t about a “magic fix” but about creating more ease in daily life. By understanding your sensory profile, you can put context around moments of stress—like why you might feel irritable at the end of the night when multiple people are talking. With this awareness, you can preempt challenges, adjust your environment, and respond with greater self-compassion rather than frustration.

How we do this:

  • Sensory Assessments & Self-Reflection: Exploring your sensory profile to understand how you process input and how it affects your emotions. We use a combination of the Adult/Adolescent Sensory Profile, the MySensory Experiences Tool, and a range of tailored questions to help map your unique sensory needs. This process provides insight into how you respond to different sensory inputs, how they impact your emotions and stress levels, and what strategies may help you regulate more effectively

  • Mapping Triggers & Unique Distress Cycles: Identifying when and why dysregulation occurs (daily routines, environments, etc.)

  • Practical Strategies for Emotional Regulation: Creating a sensory diet and toolkit to support emotional balance at home, work, and in the community

  • Mind-Body Integration: Combining sensory tools with CBT, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation techniques
